Janmabhoomi Project' creates flutter in AP Assembly Friday, June 4 2004 15:33 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad:
The mention of 'Janmabhoomi Community Development Project' and conduct of 'gram sabhas' today (June 4, 2004) created a minor flutter in Andhra Pradesh (AP) legislative assembly with treasury benches snubbing Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief and Leader of Opposition N Chandrababu Naidu over the issue.
Strongly reacting to Naidu's claim that Janmabhoomi is a 'social movement' and that Congress is trying to stall it for political reasons, Finance Minister K Roshiah said, "Holding of 'gram sabhas' is part of the Panchayat Raj Amendment Bill and not a Janmabhoomi phenomenon."
"We have taken it up as a movement to bring administration to the doorsteps of common man and if the Government desires to scrap it, it will be against the spirit of Janmabhoomi," he said while winding up the motion of thanks on the Governor's address.
Amidst interruptions, Naidu doled out facts and figures of the steps his Government had taken despite the severe drought and pointed out that Governor's speech did not focus on welfare measures (taken by his Government).
Besides severe drought witnessed by the State during the past four years, industrial development also does not find a due place in the address, Naidu added.
