Army havaldar admits enacting 2 fake encounters
Friday, June 4 2004 20:08 Hrs (IST)

Jodhpur: Another Armyman today (June 4, 2004) told a military court that he fired on concocted enemy bunkers in Siachen on August 24 and September 21 last year while Major Surinder Singh, alleged to have faked encounters, filmed them.

Havaldar Neer Bhadur Ale, deposing before the court recording summary evidence against Maj Singh, said, "Both the August 24 and September 21 encounters were fake. The site for both the encounters was the same but targets showing enemy bunkers were constructed separately for each encounter."

Earlier on June 1, Junior Commissioned Officer Nayab Subedar Phatte Bahadur Thapa had told the court that his company commander Maj Singh had got the fake encounters enacted.

Ale, who looked after anti-guided missiles, said he fired on the fake targets with Maj Singh shooting with video camera from behind him.

He said Maj Singh was injured in the fake encounter on September 21 but he did not know how. The Major was also attended by a doctor, he added.

Ale said he did not receive any order from above directly and got them only through his immediate boss Thapa who was present during the August 24 fake encounter.

"We received direct instruction from Maj Singh only once when we were asked to swear by putting our hand on Lord Hanuman's picture that we shall not reveal to anyone that the encounter was fake," ale said.

The military court is recording summary evidence as a follow-up of a Court of Inquiry which held Commanding Officer of Gorkha Battalion Col K D Singh and Maj R Lamba responsible for administrative negligence and recommended disciplinary action against Maj Singh for making exaggerated claims.
