Somnath Chatterjee unanimously elected as Speaker

New Delhi: Veteran CPM (Communist Party Marxist) leader Somnath Chatterjee was today (Jun 4, 2004) unanimously elected Speaker of Lok Sabha.

The name of Chatterjee, 75, was proposed by CPP (Congress Parliamentary Party) leader Sonia Gandhi and seconded by Leader of the House Pranab Mukherjee.

His candidature was supported by National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee and seconded by leader of the Opposition L K Advani.
