Armyman admits he enacted fake encounters
Saturday, June 5 2004 16:14 Hrs (IST)

Jodhpur: An Armyman told a military court here today (June 5,2004) that he enacted fake encounters, reported false gunning down of enemy soldiers and resigned after Maj Singh, accused in the case, asked him to do so when the fake killings were exposed.

Nayak Bhuwan Bahadur Thapa said he alongwith riflemen Yamraj Guru and R B Thapa helped construct enemy bunkers, which were demolished in the fake encounters filmed by Maj Singh.

He said rifleman Shyam Bhadur Thapa was asked to drop himself at the demolished bunker and lie there to be videographed as dead enemy soldier.

Thapa admitted he wrongly reported killing of an enemy soldier in the August 24 fake encounter and two others in a similar action on September 21.

He said he was personally involved in the August 24 encounter in which he fired two guided missiles at the bunker, which missed the target. The bunker was later demolished by firing a rocket on it, Thapa said.

The Armyman said they were made to swear before God that no one would reveal the fake killings.

But Maj Singh asked him and two others to seek voluntary retirement when the fake killings were exposed and they tendered their resignations in October last year, Thapa said.

"We submitted resignations but nothing happened on it," he said.

Thapa is the third personnel to tell the court that Army faked encounters in Siachen. Earlier JCO Phatte Bahadur Thapa and Havaldar Neer Bahadur Ale admitted the encounters were false.
