NDA plans showdown over tainted ministers issue Monday, June 7 2004 23:08 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Opposition NDA (National Democratic Alliance) appears to be headed for a showdown with the ruling UPA (United Progressive Alliance) in Parliament on the issue of "tainted" ministers when the House takes up for discussion the Motion of Thanks to the Presidential address tomorrow (June 8, 2004), with its MPs today insisting on either boycotting or disrupting the proceedings.
Though a final decision on the issue would be taken at a meeting of top NDA leaders in New Delhi tomorrow morning, a meeting of its MPs this evening stressed on an "aggressive approach" in both Houses and generating a countrywide debate till the "tainted" ministers continue in office, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) Parliamentary Party spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters.
"By defending and justifying the presence of these ministers, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has tarnished the country's image," he said after a 90-minute-long meeting of the alliance MPs attended among others by Leader of Opposition L K Advani, NDA Convener George Fernandes and BJP leader in Rajya Sabha Jaswant Singh.
He said tomorrow's meeting would decide whether to boycott, disrupt, stall or adjourn the proceedings or to walk out or participate in the debate.
