K'taka not respecting rule of law on Cauvery: AIADMK Tuesday, June 8 2004 18:15 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
AIADMK (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) today told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that Karnataka was not respecting the rule of law and directions of the court on the Cauvery water issue and urged him to immediately convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) to resolve the matter.
AIADMK Parliamentary Party leader P G Narayanan, who met the Prime Minister along with leaders of different political parties in Tamil Nadu, said Karnataka has "impounded all available water in their reservoirs during the distress year."
Referring to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa's letter to the Prime Minister two days back, he said CRA should be convened to look into the matter on an urgent basis.
Narayanan said Karnataka was not releasing even a drop of water to Tamil Nadu and was not respecting the rule of law and directives of the court.
"This is not justified. Distress has to be shared equally," he told the Prime Minister.
Last year, he said Tamil Nadu had lost all the three crops due to non-release of Cauvery water by Karnataka. This year irrigation month commences from June 12 but water level in Mettur dam is below five TMC and as a result Tamil Nadu will not have water for irrigation.
