NDA to support Akali Dal's Atwal for Deputy Speaker

New Delhi: The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has decided to support the candidature of Akali Dal (Badal) leader Charanjit Singh Atwal for Lok Sabha Deputy Speakership.

A decision to this effect was taken late last night (Jun 7, 2004) by NDA leaders at a meeting chaired by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee at his residence, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Vijay Kumar Malhotra said today (Jun 8, 2004).

Filing of nomination for Deputy Speakership of the Lower House of Parliament, which has been conceded to the Opposition, closes today.

Akali Dal (Badal), which has eight MPs, is a key ally of BJP. The Akalis have been expressing keenness for the post on the ground that the party has been with BJP through thick and thin.
