PM meets Advani, no end in sight to deadlock Tuesday, June 8 2004 20:39 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
There was no immediate end in sight to the deadlock in Parliament over the issue of "tainted" ministers despite a meeting Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had with Leader of Opposition L K Advani today (June 8, 2004).
"Till the Prime Minister doesn't clarify the Government's position regarding the tainted ministers, we will maintain this aggressive posture," BJP spokesman V K Malhotra told reporters in New Delhi today.
Malhotra, who also had a meeting with Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad, adopted a tough stand on the issue saying, "We demand that the tainted ministers step down from the Government and till then there is no question of discussion in the House."
Azad dismissed suggestions that Government planned to adjourn the House Sine Die tomorrow in view of the standoff and said that tomorrow "at least half day's business will be gone through swiftly". Election of the Deputy Speaker is the first item on the list of business.
"There is no change in the schedule of the session," which is concluding on June 10, he told reporters separately.
Downplaying Nationalist Trinamool Congress leader Mamata Banerjee's criticism of the Lok Sabha Speaker Somnath Chatterjee on the way he conducted the House during the uproar over the issue, he said that her party had been "mauled" in the polls. "She is a wounded tigress," he quipped.
