Tuesday, June 8 2004 10:02 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: The Government will consider the demand for formation of a Telangana State "at an appropriate time after due consultations".

In his address to the Parliament, President A P J Abdul Kalam referred to the issue of Centre-State relations and said that a new Commission would be set up for this purpose keeping in view the "sea changes" that have taken place in the polity and economy of India since the Sarkaria Commission had last looked at the issue two decades ago.

Kalam said that the National Development Council (NDC) would be made a more effective instrument of cooperative federalism and added the Inter-State Council would also be activated.
