LS adjourns sine die, Motion of Thanks adopted Thursday, June 10 2004 12:20 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
The pre-budget brief Lok Sabha session today (Jun 10, 2004) ended on a bitter note with an unrelenting Opposition sticking to its demand for removal of "tainted Ministers" but allowed adoption of the Motion of Thanks to the President's address.
The motion was unanimously adopted by voice vote without any debate after Prime Minister Manmohan Singh suggested that it be straightaway put to vote.
The House remained paralysed for the last three days as National Democratic Alliance (NDA) members refused to budge from their stand.
Soon after the motion was passed, Speaker Somnath Chatterjee adjourned the House sine die.
After ten minutes of uproar, Opposition members, shouting slogans "Daagi mantri ki sarkar nahin chalegi (Government with tainted Ministers cannot function)", resumed their seats when the Speaker called the Prime Minister to speak.
The Prime Minister said, "I learn there is understanding on both sides that the motion be put to vote straightaway and passed unanimously."
The House negatived all amendments to the address by President A P J Abdul Kalam to the joint sitting of Parliament on June 7.
