'TN allegation incorrect, no need of CRA meet' Thursday, June 10 2004 15:14 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
An all-party delegation from Karnataka today (Jun 10, 2004) told Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that the allegation of Tamil Nadu about Karnataka not releasing water was "incorrect" and there was no need for the Centre to convene a meeting of the Cauvery River Authority (CRA) to discuss the issue.
"We made it clear to the Prime Minister that if there is distress it has to be shared and if there is water it has to be shared" by the two States, Union Minister and senior Congress member Oscar Fernandes, who led the delegation, said.
Karnataka had released 3.3 tmcft of water to Tamil Nadu as against stipulated 2.03 tmcft at the end of first week of June this year, he said adding, "There is no cause for any apprehensions at this stage of the season."
He said as the monsoon had just begun in Karnataka and inflows were picking up, both the States should wait to assess whether there was distress or excess rainfall.
An all-party delegation from Tamil Nadu met the Prime Minister on June eight seeking his intervention for emergency release of water by Karnataka for summer crops.
The Centre has despatched a three-member team to both States yesterday (Jun 9, 2004) and the team is expected to submit its report on June 12.
