CPM gives 5-year warranty to Manmohan Govt
Tuesday, June 15 2004 17:53 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: The Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPM) today (June 15, 2004) pledged that it would support the Manmohan Singh Ministry for a full five years against any attempt by the Sangh Parivar to destabilise it, but said that it would protest if the Government pursued any "anti-people" policy in economic and other spheres.

Addressing a meeting of the party's student's body, SFI (Student's Federation of India), CPM State secretary Anil Biswas said it would be a mistake to think that dangers from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and other "fascist forces" like Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) had diminished after National Democratic Alliance's (NDA)'s disastrous election results.

"There is danger from the RSS. BJP and RSS will wait for every single opportunity to defame the Government. We have to be vigilant and carry on the fight. The present coalition Government at the Centre is dependent on Leftist support for its survival," Biswas, a Politburo member, said.

"We will do everything to protect the Government from the onslaught of communal forces. It is the responsibility of the Leftists to see that the Government does not fall," Biswas said.

He said that Left's main effort would be to act as a watchdog and whenever necessary it would protest inside and outside Parliament to check any deviations from the Common Minimum Programme or against pursuing any anti-people policy by the Government in economic and other spheres.
