Andhra Govt declares ceasefire with PWG naxals Thursday, June 17 2004 00:07 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad:
Andhra Pradesh Government today (June 16, 2004) declared ceasefire to pave way for talks with People's War Group (PWG) thereby conceding to their main demand.
The declaration of the ceasefire for a three-month period was made by State Home Minister K Jana Reddy at a press conference.
The PWG had yesterday demanded announcement of ceasefire, constitution of a committee to monitor its implementation and safe passage for its representatives participating in the talks with the Government.
The Home Minister, in a brief but cautiously worded statement written in Telugu said, "The Government, which has taken steps to stop combing operation has been implementing no fire from police side to create a conducive atmosphere for resuming talks. Inspite of that, the Government, as demanded by PWG, responding positively has decided to extend the period for another three months."
When asked whether it should be taken it as "ceasefire" the Home Minister evaded direct reply and said the Government has responded positively to the demands of the PWG.
