No decision yet on MFN status to India: Jamali
Thursday, June 17 2004 10:34 Hrs (IST)

Islamabad: Pakistan has not yet taken any decision about granting the Most Favoured Nation (MFN) status to India, Prime Minister Zafarullah Khan Jamali said.

"The issue has not yet come to me. And whatever the decision, we will ensure that it is in the best interest of Pakistan. When the issue comes up I will be able to tell you," Jamali said in an interview to 'Daily Times' when asked about local media reports that the country may soon grant the MFN status to India.

On Indo-Pak peace process, Jamali said, "India is our neighbour. We have adopted a positive approach. And one has to be flexible on many issues to keep the temperature down. Everybody wants peace. We will try to resolve all issues keeping the interests of our country first."

Playing down speculation about his replacement, he said that political intrigue was not new to him. "The political culture in Third World countries is treacherous and gives no one any quarter. The first step is to become minister and another step is to become Prime Minister. People have their aspirations and they try to take short cuts to a higher position."

Jamali also said that he would support whatever decision President Pervez Musharraf takes about quitting as the Army Chief in the best interests of Pakistan.

Musharraf earlier committed to quit as Chief of Army by the end of this year, but later said he had second thoughts about it.
