Ishrat Sheikh buried amidst tight police security
Saturday, June 19 2004 13:55 Hrs (IST)

Mumbai: The mortal remains of 19-year-old Ishrat Jahan Sheikh, who was gunned down along with three other alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba militants in Ahmedabad on June 15, was today (June 19, 2004) buried, amidst tight police security at Mumbra in adjacent Thane district.

Scores of members of the minority community, including women dressed in burqas, attended the funeral of the teenaged girl.

Shamima Jahan Sheikh, the mother of Ishrat, along with her children were inconsolable as they bid adieu to the body of the teenager, who used to give tuitions after her father's death to run the large household.

The situation appeared tense as the participants shouted slogans in Urdu seeking God's blessings for the departed soul.

In an impromptu action, Ishrat's supporters also urged for donations to help her family tide the loss of the earning member of their family.

All vehicular traffic on the road was blocked as local residents thronged the streets. Commercial establishments in the area also downed their shutters as her mortal remains were carried in a procession to the burial ground.

Samajwadi Party leader, Abu Asim Azmi, who was among those who attended her last rites, alleged that the incident was an attempt to 'malign' the minority community and demanded a probe into it.

The entire incident has put the Narendra Modi led Gujarat Government under a cloud of doubt, he alleged. He also demanded that other cases like that involving Khwaja Yunus should be probed thoroughly.
