Anju George bags bronze in US Grand Prix meet
Sunday, June 20 2004 17:22 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: India's ace long jumper Anju Bobby George secured the bronze medal with a leap of wind-aided 6.83 metres in the Prefontaine Classic IAAF Grand Prix meet at Eugene in the US.

Anju, India's brightest Olympic medal prospect, finished behind US track queen Marion Jones (6.93) and Grace Upshaw (wind-aided 6.88), also of the US, at the University of Oregon's Hayward field, according to information received.

The performance may not have fully gladdened the heart of the world number four as Grace, ranked two places below her, eclipsed the Indian to pick up the silver in a small field of six jumpers as top European contenders stayed away.

Nevertheless, it was Anju's second Grand Prix medal of her career, after the gold she won at the Qatar Super Grand Prix at Doha on May 14.
