Hockey: Yet another huge win for the Indians
Monday, June 21 2004 19:08 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: It was a new match but there was no change in either the script or fate of the hapless United States, who were thrashed 7-0 by the Indian hockey team in the second and final friendly at Moorpark College in California.

The match, played yesterday (June 20, 2004), looked like a rerun of the first game on Saturday when India won by the same margin.

Veteran striker Baljit Singh Dhillon followed his two strikes in the first match with two more yesterday as India pumped in five field goals and converted two penalty corners in the one-sided contest.

Forward Gagan Ajit Singh also scored a brace that included one from a penalty corner while Deepak Thakur, Arjun Halappa and Sandeep Singh sounded the board once each.

Gagan Ajit started the spree early on before double strikes by Dhillon and one by Thakur helped the side go to the half-time with a 4-0 lead.

Gagan Ajit added to his tally soon after the breather and the lead swelled further when Halappa scored his goal. Sandeep Singh's conversion completed the rout of the hosts.

The win capped India's training in the United States where the 26 probables underwent training at the Athletes' Performance Centre in Arizona.

The probables will leave for Amsterdam tomorrow and will play a practice match against hosts Holland on June 25 before the start of the four-nation tournament on June 27.
