'If we want peace we have to involve people of JK' Monday, June 21 2004 22:28 Hrs (IST)
Qingdao (East China):
Observing that the Kashmir issue should be resolved in a manner that is not "humiliating" to either side, Pakistan Foreign Minister Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri today said for durable peace people of Jammu and Kashmir have to be involved for a solution that meets their "expectations".
Kasuri, who held a nearly two-and-half hour long meeting with External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh, also ruled out the possibility of summit level talks "now" saying it required much more work as both India and Pakistan cannot afford a failure.
Asserting that Pakistan will abide by the commitments made in the joint statement of January 6 2004, which calls for dialogue between the two countries, he told reporters after the talks that "this, I understand is a matter of common sense that if we want durable peace, we have to involve the people of Jammu and Kashmir".
"This a challenge to the leadership of Pakistan and India that to resolve the issue in a way that there is no humiliation for Pakistan or India and that meets the expectations of the people of Jammu and Kashmir," he said adding "it is a win-win for all. I think this is doable".
Kasuri said, "A sensible answer seems to be that we need to resolve the issue of Jammu and Kashmir in order to have durable peace....The sooner we involve the people of Jammu and Kashmir in the peace process, the better it will be for the peace process."
He, however, said that he was not laying down pre-conditions.
