Union Minister R Anbumani, Congress' Ambika Soni, Satish Sharma, BJP's Yashwant Sinha, JD-U (Janata Dal-United) leader Sharad Yadav and JMM's (Jharkhand Mukthi Morcha) Stephen Marandi were among those elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha as deadline for withdrawal of nominations for elections to 65 seats spread over 13 States came to a close today.
The Election Commission stayed declaration of results for 11 seats in Uttar Pradesh till tomorrow against expectations they were likely to be elected unopposed, following a complaint from Congress' Lalit Suri.
With the election of Anbumani, who was among the six candidates elected unopposed from Tamil Nadu, his party PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi) makes a debut in the Upper House of Parliament.
The others elected are AIADMK's (All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) K Malaichamy, a retired IAS official, T T V Dinakaaran, nephew of Sasikala, a close associate of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa, S Anbalagan and N R Govindarajar and Congress' E M Sudarsana Natchiyappan.
Congress general secretary Ambika Soni, her party colleague and former union minister Sukhbans Kaur Bhinder and Shiromani Akali Dal's Raj Mohinder Singh were elected without contest from Punjab.
BJP spokesman and former Union Minister Yashwant Sinha, who lost Lok Sabha elections from Hazaribagh, was elected unopposed from Jharkhand along with JMM leader Stephen Marandi.
According to reports from Mumbai, Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil, BJP national general secretary Pramod Mahajan, NCP leader Tariq Anwar and Shetkari Sanghtana leader Sharad Joshi and two others were today declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra.
Newspaper baron and sitting Rajya Sabha member Vijay Darda (Cong) and Sena nominee and executive editor of the party mouth-piece "Saamna" Sanjay Raut, were also declared elected to the Upper House, the Vidhan Bhavan sources said.
The results were officially announced after the deadline for withdrawal of nominations expired today at 15:00 hours. With six candidates remaining in the fray for as many seats, the elections were not necessary now, the sources added.
Meanwhile, reports from Dehra Dun said that former Union Minister Satish Sharma was elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Uttaranchal.
