'Substantial evidence to prove Ishrat's LeT links' Tuesday, June 22 2004 17:46 Hrs (IST)
Mumbai:
As controversy over Ishrat Jahan Sheikh's link with Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) continued to snowball, intelligence reports today (June 22, 2004) claimed that there was substantial evidence to establish the 19-year-old college student's connection with the terrorist group and that she had visited some parts of the country with co-conspirator Javed.
Ishrat, who was among the four suspected LeT terrorists who were gunned down in an encounter with Ahmedabad Police on June 15, "knew Javed very well and had visited Lucknow and Faizabad with him", intelligence sources said.
"The duo had also stayed at Hotel Shivganga in Ahmedabad claiming themselves to be husband and wife," the sources said.
This information would be forwarded by Gujarat Government to Central Government, they added.
The two were part of the LeT and working under the Dubai-based LeT chief, Mujmil, the sources added.
The intelligence sources said six leaders had been named in their hit list and each had been given a code name. "Those whose names were included in the list were L K Advani (Lala) Narendra Modi (Mubarak) Praveen Togadia (Tinkoo) Bal Thackeray (Kutta) Vinay Katiyar (Kanta) and Uma Bharati (Behenji).
"However the risk was highest to Modi," the sources said.
