5 killed in alleged ULFA bomb blast on a public bus

Guwahati: At least five persons were killed and over 15 injured in a suspected ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) triggered bomb explosion on a public bus in Upper Assam's Sibsagar district today (Jun 24, 2004), according to police.

The improvised explosive devise (IED) with a timer went off after 10.30 hrs (IST) at Mazgaon, under Mathurapur police station, when the mini bus was travelling from Sonari to Sibsagar.

Three of the injured had been shifted to Assam Medical College hospital in nearby Dibrugarh district, while the rest were admitted to Sonari civil hospital.

Rescue and relief operations were on. The area had been cordoned off and senior police officials investigating into the incident, sources said.

It was not immediately known whether the bomb blast occurred inside the bus or on the road, sources said.

The explosion ripped the vehicle apart and shattered its glass windows.
