'Mumbai statements prove Vajpayee's inconsistency'
Thursday, June 24 2004 20:43 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: CPI (Communist Party of India) today (June 24, 2004) described Atal Bihari Vajpayee's statement that he had "had enough" of politics and then his clarification that he was saying this only in a lighter vein as proof of the former Prime Minister's "inconsistency."

"Vajpayee is known for his inconsistency and double talk ... this drama is just another proof of that," CPI National Secretary D Raja told in New Delhi after attending the condolence meeting of late freedom fighter Vishwa Nath Mathur.

Speaking at a function in Mumbai yesterday (June 23, 2004), Vajpayee had said he had "had enough" of politics and indicated that he would not be leading the party any more.

Today, however, he clarified that his surprise remarks were made in "jest".

"Vajpayee has been indulging in double talk for a long time, he says something in Manali and something else in Mumbai," Raja said.

The CPI leader said BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) was not being able to reconcile itself to the fact that people had rejected it in the Lok Sabha elections.

"It is not honouring the people's verdict and only trying to divert their attention," he added.

Earlier, addressing the condolence meet, Raja alleged BJP had tried to convert the cellular jail in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, in which Mathur was lodged for four years, into a "Sangh Parivar symbol in the name of Veer Savarkar.

"We are totally opposed to any such move," he said.

Mathur had died here on June 12 at the age of 92.
