Convicted murderer Dhananjoy's execution stayed

Kolkata: Execution of Dhananjoy Chatterjee, convicted in rape and murder cases, scheduled for tomorrow (Jun 25, 2004) has been stayed, West Bengal's Advocate-General Balai Roy said today (Jun 24, 2004).

Roy told reporters that a communique from Rashtrapati Bhavan received said that an application had been moved before President A P J Abdul Kalam for clemency to Chatterjee.

A-G said the communique from Rashtrapati Bhavan was that "the President is considering this application for clemency".

He said that the State had been asked to stay the execution of the condemned prisoner until the President finally decides on the application.

Consequently, steps have been taken to apprise Alipore Sessions Court, which had first issued the execution warrant, of the situation, Roy said.
