Jamir for common platform to resolve Naga conflict Saturday, June 26 2004 20:59 Hrs (IST)
Kohima:
Asserting that no single underground faction can bring permanent solution to the vexed Naga conflict, former Nagaland Chief Minister S C Jamir today (June 26, 2004) urged the Government to constitute a committee, comprising members from political parties and NGOs, to adopt a concrete strategy to bring all warring underground groups on a common platform.
Expressing serious concern over the on-going infighting among underground groups, reports of rampant 'tax collection' intimidation and threats by the activists, the senior Congress leaders called upon the legislators to take a pledge to end extortion.
The Consultative Committee on Peace (CCP), having only members from ruling party and without taking into confidence opposition parties, can not bring together the warring factions, Jamir said and asserted that all sections of Naga society must be involved in the peace process.
He suggested the Government should organise a 'Naga Convention' inviting all political parties, groups, NGOs, churches and members of civil societies to formulate a strategy before putting it forward to underground groups for their consideration.
Without a unified voice the vexed Naga problem cannot be resolved permanently, he said.
The senior Congress leader said he failed to understand why the factions could not come to a common platform and take up the vexed issue with the Centre when they have been fighting for the same Naga cause.
