I give great importance to farmers & villagers: PM Monday, June 28 2004 19:40 Hrs (IST)

Seeking to redress the farmers concerns, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today (June 28, 2004) said the new Government had taken concrete steps to address the problem of agricultural credit, agricultural prices and technological and marketing support for the farm community.
Assuring utmost attention to their problems, Singh told a delegation of farmers and their associations that he would seek their advice from time to time to tackle these issues.
"I attach great importance to interaction with farmers and people in our villages. There is no monopoly of wisdom in Government," Singh told a delegation of farmers and their associations during a two-hour meeting in New Delhi.
Government will seek inputs on policy from the grassroots level and there was a need for constant flow of information between the Government and farmers, he said.
Government will also soon bring forward a Bill to address the needs of agriculture sector, an official release said.
Singh said though the Common Minimum Programme of the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government is a five-year programme, urgency will be given to problems of farmers.
The Prime Minister said the Government would also give priority to revitalisation of cooperative credit system.
