'Pak infiltrators were involved in Babri demolition'
Tuesday, June 29 2004 14:20 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Taking cover under a statement made by a minister then, former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Kalyan Singh whose Government was in power when the disputed structure at Ayodhya was demolished today (Jun 29, 2004) told the Liberhan Commission probing the incident that Pakistani infiltrators were involved in razing the building to ground.

Citing a statement by the then HRD Minister Arjun Singh, Kalyan Singh's counsel B B Saksena told Justice Liberhan that from the information received by the Centre at that time some Pakistani infiltrators had made their way into Ayodhya to do the said wrongful act on December 6, 1992.

However, nothing more was known regarding the same, Saksena said and alleged that Congress too may have been involved in the structure's destruction as that party wanted to bring about the downfall of Kalyan Singh Government.

The counsel said Kalyan Singh had made arrangements for adequate security around the spot during the incident and that Kalyan personally had instructed that the structure protected at all costs.

Kalyan had also ordered the police repeatedly not to fire at the Kar Sevaks, he added. Kalyan did not have any direct or indirect role in the demolition or in the events leading to it, Saksena said. Meanwhile, the newly-appointed counsel for the Centre, P P Malhotra today filed a written application before the Commission saying he was yet to receive the voluminous documents regarding the incident and asked for four weeks time to study the documents and file additional arguments.
