Red alert at Indira Gandhi Airport over hijack threat
Wednesday, June 30 2004 20:09 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: An alarm was sounded at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi today (June 30, 2004) after a call was received claiming that one of two Hyderabad-bound flights would be hijacked, police sources said.

A caller giving his name as 'Shamim' called the Airport authorities at around 4 pm, claiming that either a Jet Airways flight or a plane of Indian Airlines bound for Hyderabad this evening would be hijacked.

Full emergency was declared at the airport with commandoes rushing to the tarmac and a checking was being conducted in the Jet and Indian Airlines aircraft, the sources said.

The Jet flight was scheduled to take off from Delhi airport at 17:00 hours, while the IA plane was to depart at 19:00 hours.

The caller told authorities that he was making the call to get the reward and gave his contact number, which turned out to be false.
