Fernandes hints at 'review' of alliance with BJP
Wednesday, June 30 2004 10:27 Hrs (IST)

Ranchi: Janata Dal-United (JD-U) president George Fernandes tonight (Jun 29, 2004) hinted at review of alliance of his party with the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) saying that it would be discussed at the JD-U's national executive meeting to be held next month.

"The question has been raised in a big meeting of the party, so it is my responsibility to place it before the JD-U's national executive," Fernandes told reporters without making it clear whether the review would of State or national level alliance with the BJP.

JD-U State unit president Goutam Sagar Rana and Energy Minister Lalchand Mahto, in their speeches at the meeting, took strong exception to big brotherly attitude of the Jharkhand unit of the BJP.

Addressing the meeting, Fernandes said that he had heard many of the party members expressing their reservations against the BJP. "Though alliance politics is always sweet and sour but since the matter has been raised by my friends, we will discuss and debate the issue of alliance at the JD-U's national executive meeting to be held next month," he added.

Stating that a party's goal should be to think how to take the nation forward, Fernandes said there were two political blocks in the country namely the Congress and BJP and we have to join hands with one of them.

"But I will not delve much into it now. This can wait until the national executive meeting," he added.

Asked whether the BJP has signaled a return to its agenda of Hindutva, he said "This a media propaganda."
