Mamata favours execution of convict Dhananjoy
Wednesday, June 30 2004 22:35 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: Nationalist Trinamool Congress (NTC) chief Mamata Banerjee today (June 30, 2004) said that her party was in favour of execution of the rape and murder convict Dhananjoy Chatterjee but would demand that the Left Front Government in West Bengal ensure that police take complaints of rape victims.

''We are not against hanging of this convict. Our party demands that he be hanged'', Banerjee told in Kolkata.

NTC Chief alleged that there were instances of rape and murder accused going scot free in West Bengal. ''We have seen that no exemplary punishment has been meted out to such accused'', she said.

Banerjee cited more instances in support of her contention and said that the police did not agree to register complaints of rape victims.

However, she had a dig at the Chief Minister's wife Meera and daughter Suchetana on the execution issue, alleging ''they are, in fact, staging a drama over the matter.''
