Manmohan to visit AP to console families of farmers Wednesday, June 30 2004 18:42 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad:
As Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrives in Hyderabad tomorrow (July 1, 2004) on a day-long visit to Andhra Pradesh, there is an air of expectancy in the ruling Congress circles that he could be convinced to chose a Lok Sabha seat from the State.
The Congress MP from Nandyal S P Y Reddy, who has already offered to vacate his seat to enable Singh to get elected to the Lower House, said he would meet Prime Minister during the visit and reiterate the offer.
"It would be a matter of immense pride for us if Singh agrees to our request and opts for Nandyal seat," Reddy said.
Reddy, along with the party MLAs from Kurnool district, would meet Prime Minister during the latter's visit to Somayajulapalle village to interact with farmers.
Nandyal was once represented by former Prime Minister P V Narasimha Rao. He had won the by-election in 1991 with a record majority after the then Congress MP G Pratap Reddy vacated the seat for Rao.
The Prime Minister is scheduled to visit two villages--one each in Kurnool and Mahaboobnagar districts-- where he would meet the families of farmers who had committed suicide in recent times.
Soon after his arrival here from Delhi, he would proceed to Somayajulapalle in Kurnool district by helicopter where he is scheduled to address a public meeting and console families of debt-ridden farmers who had committed suicide.
The Prime Minister is also likely to hand over compensation package, announced by the State Government, to the farmers' families, official sources said.
