BJP to continue agitation over 'tainted' ministers Thursday, July 1 2004 20:25 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Irked over Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's remarks that the previous NDA (National Democratic Alliance) Government too had "tainted" ministers, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) today (July 1, 2004) said it was determined to continue with its agitation in Parliament and outside demanding removal of ministers facing charges.
At a meeting of Leader of Opposition L K Advani, BJP President M Venkaiah Naidu and NDA Convenor George Fernandes here today, it was felt that the alliance should step up its agitation on this issue as also on the move by the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government to change Governors, sources said.
"We were disappointed by what the Prime Minister had said regarding ministers in the NDA Government and this was not right. We will finalise our strategy at the meeting of NDA leaders on July five," the sources said.
"We would also oppose the move by the UPA Government to change Governors for, after all, the NDA had not done such a thing except in the case of Governor of Gujarat Krishan Pal Singh, who had dismissed the elected Government of the then Chief Minister Suresh Mehta in Gujarat," sources said.
Advani and Home Minister Shivraj Patil spoke last night over telephone when he told the minister that the Government should abide by Constitutional norms and "not do such things."
Meanwhile, the sources indicated that BJP appointed Governors were contemplating seeking legal advice on the issue of their removal by the UPA Government.
