Fernandes says dismissal of Governors is 'unfair' Friday, July 2 2004 20:08 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore:
Slamming the Centre's move to dismiss Governors of four States as "wholly uncalled for", "unfair" and one that "tries to bypass the Constitution", National Democratic Alliance (NDA) convenor George Fernandes said today (Jul 2, 2004) NDA would meet tomorrow (Jul 3, 2004) to discuss the issue.
"It's wholly uncalled for. It actually tries to bypass the Constitution because Governors are appointed by President", Fernandes said.
"They (Governors) are appointed for specific periods. Knocking them out earlier just because another Government has come in, is unfair to say the least," the former Defence Minister said.
"This Government should also have remembered that when NDA Government came into office, all Governors appointed by the Congress Government were not thrown out," the JD-U (Janata Dal-United) leader said.
It's "most unbecoming" of this Government, he said on the move to sack Governors of Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat, Haryana and Goa with RSS (Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh)-BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) background appointed by the NDA Government.
Fernandes added sarcastically, "Perhaps we should have anticipated it (the dismissal) and not expected anything better than this, knowing their (Congress') past."
He said he would be in Delhi tomorrow and the issue would be discussed at an NDA meeting, after which a statement would be issued spelling out NDA's stand on it.
