Fake encounters at the instance of senior: Accused Monday, July 5 2004 16:21 Hrs (IST)
Jodhpur:
An Army officer accused of staging fake encounters and killing enemy troops in Siachen today (Jul 5, 2004) confronted his superior officer saying, "I did it on your directions".
Maj Surinder Singh against whom a court of inquiry recommended disciplinary action for making exaggerated claims told his senior officer Col K D Singh during cross-examination in military court, that he staged fake encounters at the Colonel's direction.
However, vehemently denying the charge, Col Singh retorted, "You are making this accusation with malafide and malicious intention."
"I refuse to answer your questions because you are making false allegations," he said.
When Maj Singh alleged that the Colonel tampered with the video-clips of fake encounters of August 24 and September 21 2003, Col Singh said he neither prepared the video nor he was in possession of it.
Denying that he directed the Major to create fake encounters, Col Singh said on the contrary he issued a warning letter to the erring officer in October 2003 after finding his follies.
Presiding officer of the court Brig Phillip Campose took into evidence, as sought by Maj Singh, four letters written by various officers forwarding request of Col Singh for issuing a new identity card for himself.
