NHRC seeks Govt report on Tehelka's new expose

New Delhi: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought reports from Uttar Pradesh Government and Agra Mental Asylum on the alleged issuance of "false" certificates to husbands seeking divorce from their wives.

Reports have been sought within two weeks from the Home Secretary, UP, and the director of the Agra Mental Asylum on the issuance of such certificates, it said in a statement today (Jul 5, 2004).

The move follows NHRC's suo moto cognizance of reports about the expose by Tehelka that Dr S K Gupta, psychiatrist at the Agra Mental Asylum, allegedly charged Rs 10,000 to certify women as "clinically insane" to enable their husbands get divorce.
