No rushing in on foreign ties, says Manmohan Singh
Friday, July 9 2004 11:39 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh today (Jul 8, 2004) asserted that his Government will "not rush" into any new arrangement in foreign relations before evolving broad consensus within the country.

"This is a new Government. We will look at all options and before we rush into new arrangements, we will have to have a broad domestic consensus," he told reporters while replying to a question on concluding Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with Singapore.

Singh, who was talking to reporters during the ceremonial reception of visiting Singapore Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong at Rashtrapati Bhawan, said discussions on FTA with Singapore were at an advanced stage and if any problems crop up, these will be resolved.

Goh said India need not "rush in" into decisions but take a view after considering all aspects.
