Sunday, July 11 2004 19:29 Hrs (IST)

Toronto: Commending India for bringing in measures to boost FDI in the country, several Canadian legislators, mostly of Indian-origin, have said New Delhi and Ottawa should unite to play the role as "major actors" in the international scene.

"The measures outlined in recent budget would boost Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in India," they said at a function organised by 'Panorama India' and Consulate-General of India.

"India's new orientation is a matter of some importance to Canada. The challenges that confront in this century can only be solved if the great nations of the world unite in partnership," they said, adding that "active engagement in regional and global forums on the fundamental issues of our age would ensure that India's point of view was represented and heard, and that its national interests were protected."

The legislators were Gurbax Singh Malhi, Ruby Dhalla, Jim Karygiannis, Navdeep Singh Bains, Kuldip Kular and Harinder Takhar.

"The partnership between the two countries has been forged in recent years, not (not) only in area of trade and investment, but in global issues like population and environment. They also signal a turning point in the way Indians and Canadians view each other and the roles we must play as major actors on the international scene," Karygiannis said.

Speaking on the occasion, Consul-General of India Divyabh Manchanda said: "India is on the move, leaving old ways behind and demonstrating its intention to engage more fully with the world around it. The country offers great opportunities for trade and foreign investment."
