Sunday, July 11 2004 20:21 Hrs (IST)

Ahmedabad: A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the encounter of four alleged Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) militants who had conspired to assassinate Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi on the outskirts of the city on June 15, official sources said in Ahmedabad today (July 11, 2004).

The magisterial inquiry is being conducted under section 176 CrPC as the incident involved police firing, Ahmedabad District Collector D Thara told.

"A few days ago a sub-divisional magistrate was entrusted with the responsibility of the inquiry and a report has to be tabled to the Government within two months," Thara said.

The inquiry began with the city crime branch police being asked to submit a copy of the FIR and the post-mortem reports of all the four suspected LeT ultras who were killed, Thara said.

Identity proof of all the four alleged terrorists with their address as also names of policemen involved in the encounter have been sought, he said. Two Indians and two Pakistani, all alleged LeT suicide squad members, were gunned down in a cross fire by the crime branch police in the wee hours on June 15 on the outskirts of the city.

The alleged terrorists--Ishrat Jehan Sheikh from Mumbra in Mumbai, Javed Sheikh of Pune, Jishan Johar alias Abdul Ghani from Gujranwala (Pakistan) and Amjadali Akbarali Rana alias Salim of Haveli Diwan (Pakistan)-- were killed in the encounter.
