Left should withdraw support if sincere on FDI: BJP Monday, July 12 2004 09:50 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Describing the opposition by Left parties to Government's proposal to lift sectoral caps of FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) in insurance and two other sectors as "friendly sparring", BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) tonight (Jul 11, 2004) said that if they were serious about it, they should withdraw support from the Government.
"The Left parties are indulging in friendly sparring. If they are sincere about the Opposition, they should withdraw support from the Government," BJP Parliamentary party spokesman V K Malhotra said.
"But it seems there is an understanding between the Left parties and the Government that they will oppose it for public consumption," he said.
He said as that far as BJP was concerned, it had earlier wanted sectoral cap of FDI raised to 49 percent. At that time, Congress had opposed it as also the Swadesh Jagran Manch and so it was capped at 26 per cent.
"Now, it is for the party to decide whether to support it or not," he said.
