Mumbai:
Noted environmentalist and chief of Narmada Bachao Andolan (NBA), Medha Patkar today (July 12,2004) began her indefinite dharna in Mumbai in the grounds next to Mantralaya, the headquarters of Maharashtra Government, to press for her demand for proper rehabilitation of affected families of Sardar Sarovar project.
Medha, along with her supporters, began the dharna near the life-size statue of Mahatma Gandhi in South Mumbai.
Lashing out the DF (Democratic Front) Government, Patkar told that the decisions taken by the Cabinet about rehabilitation and providing amenities to displaced people were not being followed.
"Every year the NBA holds talks with the ministers but assurances that were given to us were not being fulfilled," she alleged.
Patkar also submitted a memorandum to the Government today over the rehabilitation issue and was hopeful of meeting a senior minister later in the day.
