Cong-sponsored bandh affects life in Arunachal Wednesday, July 14 2004 10:56 Hrs (IST)
Itanagar:
Normal life was affected due to the 24-hour Arunachal Pradesh bandh called by Opposition Congress today (July 14, 2004) demanding immediate removal of Governor V C Pande and imposition of President's rule in the State.
Today is the last day of the three-day agitation called by the Congress following the dissolution of the House on the recommendation of the United Democratic Front coalition Government led by Gegong Apang.
All private modes of transport remained off the road and shops and daily markets remained closed in the State capital in the wake of the bandh which began at 5 a m.
State transport office sources in Itanagar said that four long distance buses had left for their respective destinations with police escorts. About 10 buses were plying in the capital complex with police escorts.
There was no report of any untoward incident so far and police personnel were deployed in vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile Home Commissioner M K Parida had on Monday (July 12) asked Government servants not to absent themselves from their offices during the agitation.
Yesterday's 12-hour capital bandh, called by the Congress, had evoked total response with all the Central Government offices including BSNL, Post Offices and banks not functioning. Although State Government offices remained open, attendance was thin.
