Birla clan to go to court; Rs 5,000 cr at stake
Wednesday, July 14 2004 14:59 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: The Birlas comprising Ganga Prasad, Basant Kumar and Krishna Kumar have unanimously decided to move the court challenging the will of Priyamvada Birla bequeathing assets of the M P Birla group to Rajendra S Lodha.

"We are sure that the will is fabricated and so are going to challenge it in the court of law," highly placed sources in B K Birla group said today (July 14, 2004).

Sources said the decision was taken in a round table meet of the Birla patriarchs G P, B K and K K last evening (July 13, 2004). "It has been unanimously decided to move the court as all the Birlas feel that the Will is not genuine," he said.

Policy decision has been taken to move the court after a series of meetings with lawyers, solicitors and family members and it is just a matter of time before a suit is filed, sources said. "We will be moving Calcutta High Court within next two to three days and if possible earlier also," the sources said.

The Birla veterans met yesterday (July 13, 2004) in the aftermath of the opening of the Will of late Priyamvada Birla, widow of Madhav Prasad Birla. Priyamvada passed away childless on July 3.

R S Lodha, to whom Priyamvada has left over Rs 5,000 crore of assets of the M P Birla group was close to the clan for over the last two decades and was appointed co-chairman of the group about five years back. This was the first time in the family that an outsider has been gifted the Birla assets.
