Punjab actions can set bad precedent: Himachal Wednesday, July 14 2004 14:30 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
As the controversy over the sharing of the Ravi and Beas waters continued, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh today (July 14,2004) met Prime
Minister Manmohan Singh and said Punjab's action to terminate all agreements with neighbouring states in this regard could set a bad precedent.
"The water issue is not only between Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan, this type of problem is between many other states as well. If this method (adopted by Punjab) succeeds then everybody else will also resort to this," Singh told reporters after meeting the Prime Minister.
Punjab's abrogation of water-sharing accords with neighbouring states not only rocked Parliament yesterday (July 14,2004) but also prompted the Prime Minister to hold talks with Chief Ministers of all the concerned states to resolve the issue.
Manmohan Singh held separate meetings with Punjab and Haryana Chief Ministers Amarinder Singh and Om Prakash Chautala respectively last night.
