British girl case: Police teams arrive to interrogate Friday, July 16 2004 12:04 Hrs (IST)
Kolkata:
A team of Chandigarh police and a detective of the Hampshire police of UK are scheduled to arrive in Kolkata today (July 16,2004) on way to Kalimpong to interrogate Maninder Pal Singh Kohli arrested in connection with the rape and murder of British teenage girl Hannah Foster last year (2003-2004).
State IGP, Law and Order Chayan Mukherjee told that there was no information about the likely arrival of the girl's parents Trevor and Hillary Foster now in New Delhi.
West Bengal police, who nabbed Kohli at Panighata near Indo-Nepal border yesterday (July15, 2004) were continuing interrogation of the man, who had been evading police dragnet by escaping from South Hampton in the UK to Chandigarh and then to Kalimpong.
Mukherjee said that the State police was in constant touch with its counterpart in Chandigarh and the detectives in Hampshire. 17 year-old Hannah was raped and murdered at South Hampton on March 14, 2003 and Kohli is the prime suspect. He had since fled to India and was evading the police.
The arrest followed her parents' appeal to provide leads on the whereabouts of Kohli and announced a Rs 45 lakh award for it. Kohli's photographs were published in newspapers and shown in the TV, which alerted his neighbours in Kalimpong. Kohli was caught at the bus stand at Panighata yesterday while trying to escape to Nepal.
The Chandigarh-born man, a graduate from Patiala University, had migrated to England in 1993 and settled down after marrying a British girl. He was working there as a driver with a courier company.
