CPM will not withdraw support to UPA Govt: Yechuri Friday, July 16 2004 16:05 Hrs (IST)
Kolkata:
Critical of the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government's decision to hike FDI (Foreign Direct Investment) limit in telecom, insurance and civil aviation and offload five per cent stake in NTPC, CPM (Communist Party Marxist) ruled out the possibility of the party withdrawing support and hoped that such a situation would not arise.
''We never said that the support to the UPA Government will be withdrawn. You cannot show a single Government which was supported by CPM and which fell due to withdrawal of support by the party,'' party Politburo member Sitaram Yechuri
told in Kolkata.
Reiterating that CPM was playing the role of a 'watchdog' and not a 'lapdog', Yechuri during a panel discussion on the union budget, said that his party had told the Manmohan Singh Government about its opposition to increasing FDI limit on telecom, insurance and civil aviation as well as offloading five per cent stake in NTPC which was against the CMP (Common Minimum Programme).
''We are not opposed to FDI if it fulfilled certain conditions but we are opposed to increasing FDI limit in these areas. We think that all coalition partners are mature enough
to understand this,'' he said.
To a question whether his party would withdraw support if the trade off between the Government and CPI-M, the biggest outside ally, persisted, Yechuri said, ''we do not think such a situation will arise. It will be unfortunate if such a situation arose when we have to bite.''
