Govt conveys concern over BPO restrictions to USTR
Friday, July 16 2004 20:33 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Government today (July 16, 2004) said it has conveyed its concern over restrictions being imposed on Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) in America to US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Zoellick.

The country's concern was conveyed in the context of discussions to revive the talks at the WTO (World Trade Organisation), affected due to the stalemate at the Cancun Ministerial conference, Minister of State for Commerce E V S K Elangovan told the Lok Sabha in a written reply.

He said Government was carefully monitoring the moves at the sub-federal level in the US to introduce a legislation to check outsourcing by Government agencies.

The issue is being taken up both through official and business channels, he said adding the US Government had in the past acknowledged that the proposed legislation amounted to 'bad policy'.
