School fire in TN: Toll rises to 90, four arrested Saturday, July 17 2004 09:58 Hrs (IST)

With the death of one more person late tonight (Jul 16, 2004), who tried to rescue the children from the fire that raged through a private school located in a residential area in Kumbakonam in Tamil Nadu's Thanjavur district, the toll rose to 90, police said.
Police said that they have only identified the bodies of 29 boys and 39 girls of the victims, besides the person who tried to rescue the children.
Police said that about 20 were battling for life in the hospitals.
Meanwhile, four persons were arrested tonight in connection with the tragedy, police said.
They said those arrested were the school correspondent, two cooks and the noon-meal supervisor of the school.
Union Minister for Information Technology and Communications, Dayanidhi Maran, who visited Kumbakonam tonight, said he hoped that officials would take necessary steps to prevent such mishaps in future.
He told newsmen that the Government should insist that all places, where more than 100 people gathered, should have 'precautionary equipments, including the fire extinguishers'.
Asked if the Centre would extend any relief to the victims, Maran, who was accompanied by Union Ministers of State Ragupathy and Palani Manickam, said 'now the priority is to give medical treatment.
