Stamp scam: Key aide of Telgi surrenders in H'bad
Thursday, July 22 2004 22:12 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Mohd A Hafiz, a key aide of Abdul Karim Telgi and the main person in-charge of circulation and sale of fake stamps in Delhi, has surrendered at a court in Hyderabad.

Giving details, a CBI spokesman said that Hafiz surrendered before IXth Metropolitan Magistrate, Hyderabad, yesterday (July 21, 2004).

A CBI team was on the trail of Hafiz for the past one month since the officers tracked the movements of the accused at different places in Hyderabad on the basis of print-out of mobile telephone numbers used by him.

His house and the house of his brothers were raided by the CBI team but he was not found. Finally, sensing that there was no escape, Hafiz surrendered.

Hafiz, a resident of Garden Towers, Masab Tank, Hyderabad is alleged to be the main link of Telgi in the fake stamp and stamp paper circulation in Delhi and several other places.

He is an absconder in the Begum Bazar case (Hyderabad), which was subsequently taken over by CBI on the orders of the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, CBI sources said that a team of the agency was going to Hyderabad to bring the accused to Delhi for interrogation.
