Pak is taking major steps on infiltration: Musharraf Saturday, July 24 2004 16:29 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad:
President Pervez Musharraf has said that Pakistan has taken "major steps" to address India's concerns over infiltration of militants into Jammu and Kashmir.
Musharraf conveyed this to External Affairs Minister K Natwar Singh during their 90-minute meeting at the President's official Army House residence in Rawalpindi yesterday (Jul 23, 2004), media reports in Islamabad said today (Jul 24, 2004) quoting Pakistani officials.
At the meeting, Singh raised India's concerns over the issue of infiltration and militant training camps in Pakistan for which Musharraf said that "major steps" have already been taken to address these concerns, local daily 'Dawn' reported.
He told Singh that Pakistani Government was being criticised for taking "unilateral" steps in this regard without India taking any "reciprocal measures," it said.
On his part, Musharraf, while calling for a solution to the Kashmir issue, said that talks cannot be "open ended" and wanted the two countries to initiate some process of discussion on possible solutions, it said.
The Indian minister is reported to have given no assurances on the issue. "He maintained that the Indian Government could not rush into things because it also had to take along its coalition partners. His message was that 'we have to be patient' the daily said.
