Monday, July 26 2004 18:00 Hrs (IST)

Junagadh (Gujarat): At least one person was killed and five others injured in communal clashes between two communities in the sensitive coastal town of Veraval of the district, over an incident of eve-teasing prompting authorities to impose curfew till 8.00 am tomorrow (July 27, 2004), official sources said.

Unconfirmed reports, however, said at least two persons were killed but it was not immediately known whether they died in police firing or mob clashes.

Mobs of both communities went on a rampage torching at least 40 shops and close to 20 small vehicles were burnt in Baharkot, Gandhichowk, Bhakla and Charchowk areas, the sources said.

District Collector Rohit Pathak told reporters that curfew has been clamped from 2:30 pm today to 8.00 am tomorrow.

Situation in the town is reported to be tense, Pathak said.
