Removal of Vajpayee's photo will set wrong guide: BJP Tuesday, July 27 2004 11:33 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Taking strong exception to the reported moves of the Centre to remove all photographs of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee along the national highways, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) today (July 27, 2004) warned that it could set a "wrong precedent" for future.
"BJP has been concerned with such reports appearing in a section of the media. This is part of a series of actions taken by the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government, which smacks of arrogance and intolerance," party general secretary and spokesman Arun Jaitley told reporters in New Delhi.
He said it has been the practice to honour various national leaders, including former Prime Ministers who have made contributions to the country.
"It is another unfortunate precedent, which the UPA has created. It will give rise in future for reciprocal tendencies to change the names of various projects, schemes, and structures
and institutions which are named after the national leaders," Jaitley said.
Recalling that the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) Government did not ask Governors appointed by the earlier Government to resign, he said, "The action of removing Governors appointed by the NDA lacks grace on the part of UPA. The NDA Government appointed Governors in consultation with the Chief Ministers. The UPA has discontinued with the practice. It has set up precedence for the future."
